Privacy Policy

HanziCoverage is built to be used without giving up any personal information. We do not run accounts, we do not ask for your email, and we do not set tracking cookies. Most importantly, the Chinese text you paste into the tools is analyzed entirely on your own device and is never uploaded. This policy describes exactly what happens to data when you use the site, and it only describes things we actually do.

Your pasted text never leaves your browser

This is the core promise of the site, and it is literally true in the code. When you paste Chinese into the analyzer, the difficulty grader, or any coverage tool, the segmentation, the vocabulary lookup, and the coverage math all run inside your browser using data that was downloaded with the page. Your text is never sent to us or to any server, there is no analysis request, and we never see, store, or transmit a single character of what you paste. Clearing or closing the tab discards it.

What we do receive: anonymous aggregate statistics

So that we can see which tools are used and, over time, publish honest aggregate benchmarks, the site sends a small, anonymous summary event when you run an analysis. To be precise, and because your text stays on your device, this summary is not your text. It contains only coarse, bucketed values drawn from a fixed catalog:

• Which HSK scheme you viewed (the 2.0 or the 3.0 scheme).
• A coarse text-length band, for example "100 to 500 characters," never the exact length.
• The HSK level you selected as what you already know.
• A banded coverage figure, for example "70 to 79 percent," never a precise number.

Every field is a broad band shared by many visitors, so a single event, or even the full event, can never be traced back to you or used to reconstruct what you typed. Because this banded summary does leave your device, we do not claim that "nothing is uploaded." We claim the specific, true thing: your text is never uploaded, and what we receive is anonymous aggregate statistics with no accounts and no identifiers.

Analytics

We measure aggregate traffic with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool we host ourselves at umami-analytics-puce.vercel.app. It is cookieless: it does not set cookies, does not fingerprint you, and does not build a cross-site profile. The anonymous aggregate summary described above is sent through the same tool. No analytics data is sold or handed to an advertising network.

What we do not collect

• No user accounts, logins, or profiles.
• No email sign-up, newsletter, or contact form that stores your address.
• No advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party ad networks.
• No sale or sharing of personal information, because we do not hold any.

Settings on your device

Any preferences the tools remember, such as which HSK scheme you last used, are saved in your browser's own localStorage and stay on your device. There is no account to delete and no server-side copy. Clearing your browser storage erases them.

Outbound links to the App Store

Some pages link to Wordbrush, an iOS app made by our publisher, on Apple's App Store. We record only that an outbound tap happened, as an anonymous aggregate count with no identifier attached. When you follow the link, Apple's App Store applies its own privacy policy, which we do not control. We do not pass any personal information to Apple; we hold none to pass.

Third-party hosting

Like any website, our host and content-delivery network process the standard server request data (such as your IP address) needed to deliver the page to you. This is ordinary web infrastructure, is not used by us to profile you, and is not combined with any other data about you.

Children

HanziCoverage is a general-audience study resource. We do not knowingly collect information from children, and in fact we do not collect personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If our data practices change, we will update this page and move the effective date above. Because we start from collecting no personal data and never receiving your text, any change would only ever be described here in the same plain terms.
